The Tunnel to Towers Foundation unveiled major smart-home renovations Thursday for U.S. Army Sgt. Michael Shane Ayers. The foundation also announced it had paid off his mortgage. The upgrades are designed to give the Iraq and Afghanistan veteran greater independence and accessibility after he was left paralyzed in a vehicle rollover.
Ayers, who enlisted in 2004 after being inspired by the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, earned a Bronze Star, an Army Commendation Medal and a Combat Action Badge during his service, according to Tunnel to Towers. A subsequent vehicle rollover left him with a spinal cord injury and resulted in quadriplegia.

The foundation said the Coweta home now features smart-home technology and accessibility renovations tailored to Ayers’s needs.
“The smart home amenities are extremely beneficial, and so many things are now just at arm’s reach… things are accessible to me in my wheelchair, and it makes it so much easier,” said Sgt. Michael Shane Ayers.
Tunnel to Towers, a nonprofit founded to support veterans and families of first responders, has completed similar home-build and renovation projects nationwide. Officials said the Coweta project was part of the group’s ongoing mission to provide mortgage relief and accessible housing to severely injured veterans.
