NWFA Delivers Custom Smart Home to Disabled Army Veteran

The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) completed its 86th home through the R.I.S.E. program, dedicating a new residence to retired U.S. Army Sgt. Mary Dague on March 5 in Four Oaks, North Carolina.

This project, a collaboration with the Gary Sinise Foundation, features specialized flooring provided by NWFA member Peachey Hardwood. The R.I.S.E. (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment) initiative builds specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans.

Sgt. Dague, who enlisted following the September 11 attacks, lost both her arms during a 2007 deployment in Iraq. While responding to an improvised explosive device (IED) located near a school, she moved to shield her team from a sudden blast.

“In addition to losing both her arms in service to our country, Sergeant Dague also has battled breast cancer,” said Stephanie Owen, NWFA president and CEO.

Owen noted that the veteran has maintained a positive outlook despite facing multiple significant health challenges. The organization expressed pride in working with industry partners to facilitate the installation of real wood floors for the residence.

“Despite these setbacks, she continues to inspire others with her positive attitude and fighting spirit. We’re honored to partner with Peachey Hardwood to provide beautiful real wood floors for her new home,” added Stephanie Owen, NWFA president and CEO.

The NWFA has now finalized 86 homes under this charitable framework. Participation involves 163 member companies that have collectively contributed more than $7 million in products, installation labor, and logistics across the country.

The organization is currently coordinating with its members to provide materials for an additional 13 homes. These projects are presently in various stages of construction and planning to support other veterans in need.
