Weston Hall reopened as Detroit’s first all-affordable smart apartment building. The structure sat vacant for more than two decades. Now the 47-unit complex in Virginia Park offers technology that tenants can operate through their phones.
Detroit Landmark Development Corporation purchased the property five years ago.
“It had no roof, wasn’t occupied 20 years prior, right, but we took on the challenge,” said Ed Fowler, a partner with Detroit Landmark Development Corporation, according to WXYZ.
One-bedroom and studio units include smart dimmers and smart locks. Fowler mentioned tenants can operate these devices with their cell phones.
More than 200 Detroiters received hands-on job training through the restoration. Amber Rose Simpson, a project manager who participated, said the experience gave her skills she used to open her own business.
The facility offers credit-building programs. These report on-time rent payments to credit bureaus.
Resident Safeya Woolcock said she feels proud to call the place her home. “It just showcases how nothing can turn into something so it’s great. To see the transformation, it’s an honor to be here,” Woolcock said.
